THE BIKE-A-THON IS THIS SUNDAY!
Here is a video from World Bicycle Relief on how bicycles positively impact students, healthcare workers, businesses, and the local economy.
Kane Street Synagogue is Having a Bike-A-Thon!!!
Hi everyone! Kane Street Synagogue is having a bike-a-thon!
My name's Mollie. I'm in Miftan Class at Kane Street Synagogue. We have done many service projects throughout the year. We helped out at the Gowanus Canal, volunteered at a soup kitchen, served lunch to workers at West End Temple in the Rockaways after Hurricane Sandy, and most recently, had an e-waste drive.
Now we're having a bike-a-thon to raise money for World Bicycle Relief. The bike-a-thon will provide bikes for disaster victims, healthcare workers, students, and entrepreneurs.
The bike-a-thon will be on Sunday, April 28, at 11am. The ride is for kids and adults. It starts at Kane Street Synagogue and rides to Grand Army Plaza/Prospect Park. Then we will ride to Pier 5/Brooklyn Bridge Park for a picnic. In total, that is 5 miles. All riders must sign a registration form which you can pick up at Kane Street, and wear a helmet. Kids have to be at least in 2nd grade to ride. Kids under 5th grade MUST ride within sight distance of a riding adult. If you don't want to ride, you can be part of the ground crew to help at the start, meet us at Prospect Park, and help set up for the picnic.
If you want to find out more about World Bicycle Relief, please go to www.worldbicyclerelief.org
I'll get a few of my Miftan classmates (and maybe our teacher, Lauren) to post and give you some more info about the bike-a-thon and our goals for it. Please, if you're interested in being a rider or part of the ground crew, come to Kane Street Synagogue in Brooklyn to pick up the registration form. Thanks!
Oh - this is important - I forgot to mention sponsors!! Yeah, that's kind of the whole point for the bike-a-thon. So here's what you do: you go up to your sweet and loving grandparents and say "Hi! Will you give me $1 for each mile I ride at the bike-a-thon?" Do this, and you could raise $5 just from riding your bike and getting a sponsor. There's a sponsor sheet you can pick up at Kane Street along with the registration sheet. That's all for now!
For those of you that aren't good at keeping track of dates, the bike-a-thon is THIS upcoming Sunday. Just wanted to clear that up. Here's another thing about sponsors - you don't have to be a biker to raise money. You can still collect donations. My Hebrew School classmate Zoe is going to be on the ground crew with me, but she has already raised enough money for World Bicycle Relief to buy three bikes for people that need them. Way to go Zoe!
Anyway, please follow her example. All donations must be collected at Kane Street on the day of the bike-a-thon. I'm going to try my best this week to get my family, friends, and teachers to make donations. You can do the same. You can send a donation of any sort, little or big, check or cash, to Kane Street Synagogue in Brooklyn, NY. Anything and everything will be appreciated. Thanks again!
I went around to a few of my teachers and classmates, and so far I've managed to raise $11 in the past few days. That's not including some money that my parents and I will add in before we hand in the donations on Sunday. I'm making slow-and-steady progress. So that's something. Please watch that video that has been added to the top of the page, and check out the Details page for specifics.
My dad told some of his coworkers about the bike-a-thon, so now the amount I've raised is $66! Yay! And the bike-a-thon is tomorrow! Yay!
